Frequently asked questions
What is PDF/A and why would I need it?
PDF/A is an ISO-standardized (ISO 19005) version of PDF built for long-term archiving. It requires everything needed to display the document to be embedded in the file itself — fonts, color profiles, no reliance on external content or encryption — so a court, government agency, hospital or bank can be confident the file will look identical decades from now. It's commonly required for legal filings, government records, medical charts and regulated financial documents.
Which PDF/A level should I choose — 1b, 2b or 3b?
PDF/A-1b is the most restrictive and most widely accepted, based on PDF 1.4 — use it if a specific authority or system asks for "1b" or just "PDF/A". PDF/A-2b (based on PDF 1.7) allows transparency and layers and is a good modern default. PDF/A-3b adds the ability to embed arbitrary files, such as the original source document or an XML invoice, inside the PDF/A container — used for e-invoicing standards like ZUGFeRD or Factur-X.
Is my file uploaded, and is that safe?
Yes — real PDF/A conversion has to re-process fonts, colors and metadata at a level that requires a full PDF engine, so the file is uploaded to our conversion server, converted, sent back, and deleted immediately afterward. It is never stored, indexed, or shared.
Does this produce PDF/A-1a, 2a or 3a (accessible/tagged PDF/A)?
No — the "a" (Accessible) conformance levels require the PDF's logical structure to be manually tagged for screen readers, which an automated conversion can't do reliably. This tool produces "b" (Basic) conformance, which covers the visual/archival requirement that most compliance rules ask for.
